Wedding Day Signage Must-Haves: Details That Make a Big Impact

| Becky Smithbury

The short answer: The wedding signage worth investing in falls into two camps. Larger statement pieces: a welcome sign, a table plan, and an order of the day. Smaller useful signs: reserved seating, cocktail menu, guestbook, cake/dessert table, cards and gifts, unplugged ceremony, hashtag, memorial signs, and friendly comforts like flip-flop or blanket baskets. Match them all to your invitations for a properly cohesive look.

Briefly, in case you're new- I'm Becky and Hawthorne and Ivory is my wedding stationery design studio. I make colourful, fun-loving save the dates, invitations, on the day pieces (including all the signage we're about to cover), guest books and thank you cards for UK couples.

When you're planning your wedding day, it's easy to get swept up in the big-ticket items, your dress or suit, your venue, your flowers... But there's something about the smaller details that really ties everything together and makes your day feel polished and personal.

Enter: wedding signage...

From the practical to the purely delightful, signage is one of those elements that not only helps your day run smoothly but also adds so much personality and flair to your styling. Whether you're going big with florals and bold colour, keeping things classic and clean, or going for quirky and fun, your signage can be a beautiful extension of your wedding aesthetic.

Here are some of the key pieces I always recommend to couples planning their big day...

A Welcome Sign

First impressions count, and a welcome sign is a lovely way to greet your guests as they arrive! It can include your names, the date, and a little message or quote if you fancy. It's perfect when positioned at the entrance to your ceremony or reception space and really sets the tone for the day ahead. Want to tie it in with your florals or theme? Absolutely. Want to match it to your invitations for that full-circle moment? Even better!

A Table Plan

Your guests will make a beeline for this as soon as they arrive at the reception, so it's one of the most functional and important signs of the day! A table plan keeps things organised and saves your loved ones from awkwardly hovering near tables trying to work out where to sit. But beyond the practicalities, it's also a brilliant styling opportunity. Whether you want a large statement board, a set of hanging cards, or something super creative and interactive, there are so many ways to make your table plan shine.

An Order of the Day

Let's face it, weddings are full of excitement and it's nice for guests to know what's coming up. An order of the day sign is a fab way to give a quick overview of what's happening and when- ideal for keeping everyone in the loop without having to announce every transition. Plus, it looks amazing styled up with florals, candles, or propped on an easel near your welcome sign.

Smaller Signage (It's the Little Things!)

Don't underestimate the power of the little signs! Here are some of my favourite small but mighty signage ideas:

  • Reserved seating signs- great for keeping seats free for important guests at the ceremony.
  • Cocktail menu signs- if you're serving signature cocktails, shout about it! Guests love to know what's on offer and get involved in all of your special touches- bottoms up!
  • Guestbook signs- encourage people to sign the guestbook you'll treasure forever. Thinking of a Polaroid guestbook? Find more tips here!
  • Cake flavour, dessert table, or sweet cart signage- perfect for pointing out what's on offer (especially useful if there are allergy-friendly options!).
  • Cards & gifts signs- helps your guests to avoid the "where do I put our card/present?" moment.
  • Unplugged ceremony signs- if you're going phone-free, a gentle and polite sign can make all the difference to keep stray iPhones out of your photographs.
  • Hashtag signs- on the flip side... if you're encouraging guests to snap and share on socials, pop your hashtag on a cute little sign so no one misses it!
  • Memorial signs- a heartfelt way to honour loved ones who can't be there in person. A small sign placed beside a photo or candle creates a quiet moment of remembrance that feels really special and deeply personal.
  • Quotes or lyrics- these can be dotted around your venue as extra personal touches. A favourite lyric, poem, or even an inside joke adds something really you to the decor.
  • Toiletry, Blanket, or flip-flop signs- if you're offering little comforts like a basket of toiletries so that guests can freshen up, blankets for a chillier evening or flip-flops for tired feet, a cute sign makes them feel like a considered part of the day and ensures they aren't overlooked!
  • Favour signs- if you're giving favours that aren't placed at each setting (or need a little explaining), a sign like "Please take one!" or "Handmade with love" is a sweet finishing touch.
