Capture the Moment: Creating The Perfect Polaroid Guestbook For Your Wedding

| Becky Smithbury

The short answer: A polaroid guestbook turns an old wedding tradition into something way more fun. You'll need an instant camera (the Fujifilm Instax Mini is a great pick), plenty of film with extras for reshoots and pocketed photos, a clearly signposted station with pens and decoration, and a personalised guestbook designed to fit your photos and messages side by side. For larger weddings, two cameras keeps the queue moving.

Pause for a quick introduction- I'm Becky and Hawthorne and Ivory is my wedding stationery design studio. I create colourful, fun-loving save the dates, invitations, on the day pieces, guest books (including the polaroid kind we're about to chat about) and thank you cards for UK couples.

In the age of digital everything, there's something irresistibly charming about the instant nostalgia of a Polaroid photo. If you're looking to add a whimsical and interactive element to your wedding, a Polaroid guestbook is a fantastic choice. It not only creates a fun activity for your guests but also leaves you with a unique keepsake filled with candid memories.

If you're looking to sprinkle a bit of retro charm and interactive fun into your wedding, a photo guestbook is the way to go.

Let's take a closer look at personalised polaroid guest books, and most importantly… some helpful tips on how to make sure people sign them on the big day.

Polaroid Guestbooks: Snap Happy

Imagine flipping through a beautifully crafted book filled with candid snapshots and handwritten notes from your loved ones. That's the essence of a polaroid guest book.

My wedding guestbooks are designed to be super versatile and make the perfect home for the polaroids your guests will be snapping.

What sets my guest books apart is the quality of materials and the thoughtful design elements. The books are also designed with ample space for both photos and messages, striking the perfect balance between visual appeal and functionality.

Crafted with care and attention to detail, they're designed to complement your event's aesthetic seamlessly. From elegant, the Design Shop to bold, the Design Shop themes, there's a style to suit every taste and occasion.

This level of personalisation extends beyond just the book itself as I offer a range of coordinating stationery items, from save the dates all the way to thank you cards, allowing you to create cohesive stationery for your entire event.

So now let's get into some helpful tips!

Setting up your station… and making sure people sign!

Step 1. Choose Your Polaroid Camera and Film

First things first, you'll need an instant film camera. The Fujifilm Instax Mini is a popular choice due to its ease of use and price point, and there are others in their range!

Whatever you opt for… make sure you have plenty of film- you don't want to run out halfway through the night! Think of your headcount and go from there. I'd definitely recommend including some extras in your count in case any of your guests end up reshooting their photo- or drunkenly pocketing it…

Tip: If you have a larger headcount, think about getting two cameras so that your guests aren't queuing and waiting for their turn!

Step 2. Set Up the Guestbook Station

Designate a specific area at your reception for the polaroid guestbook station.

Provide a small table, and decorate it to match your wedding theme with a floral arrangement and maybe an extra tablecloth or runner for a pop of colour.

Place the guestbook prominently along with the Polaroid camera, film, pens, and any accessories- more on this next!

Tip: Make sure this is an obvious spot that won't get overlooked!

Step 3. Attaching Photos to the Book

So, getting into the logistics… You'll need to provide a way for your guests to affix the polaroids to the guestbook pages. There are several creative ways to do this:

  • Glue Dots: These are easy to use and ensure that the photos stay in place without causing any damage to the book or the photos.
  • Glue Sticks: Another idea that keeps things simple, though you might want to give someone the job of making sure the caps go back on so the glue doesn't dry out before everyone has had their turn!
  • Washi Tape: This can add a pop of colour and lightly hold the photos in place. Super simple, guests just need to tear off a bit of tape and stick their polaroid in place. I'd suggest a more permanent fix after the big day as washi tape can be quite low-tack and you don't want any of those precious photos to fall out!
  • Double-Sided Tape: Simple and effective, but may be slightly frustrating for guests to peel off the backing.
  • Photo Corners: Perfect for a vintage look, photo corners can hold the pictures securely while allowing them to be easily removed if needed. These might be a bit fiddly for guests to do themselves, so you might want to consider having these stuck in place ready for guests to slot their photos into.
  • Self-adhesive index card pockets: If you're looking for something that feels a bit more like a traditional photo book… these could be just the ticket. Stick them on the pages in advance, and be sure to leave space for guests to write a note!

Step 4. Include a Sign with Instructions

A well-placed sign can make all the difference in ensuring your guests know how to use your polaroid guestbook. But, don't overthink it!

Something as simple as "Our Photo Guestbook - Leave a photo and your wishes for the newlyweds", or something cute like "Snap It! Shake It! Stick It! Sign It!" will absolutely get the message across.

You can also include instructions about changing the film, or you can task one of the more responsible members of your wedding party to keep an eye on this if you prefer to keep the signage a bit more brief.

As long as it's clear what this station is for, you're all set.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Guestbook Experience

Glue and adhesives for attaching photos

1. Assign a Helper

Ask a member of your wedding party or a friend to keep an eye on the guestbook station. They can help guests with the camera and make sure the area stays tidy and ready to use and that camera is loaded with film.

2. Encourage Participation

Make a few announcements during the reception to remind guests to visit the guestbook station. This can be done by your DJ or MC.

3. Get Involved!

Speaking of encouraging participation… if the VIPs (... you!) are actively using the camera with your guests, it'll definitely motivate your guests to head on over to the guestbook station!

4. Have Extra Supplies

I've already suggested having plenty of extra film, but definitely make sure you're not short on pens or whatever you're using to stick the photos in place either!

With this guide, you're all set to create a Polaroid photo guest book that your guests will enjoy contributing to, and you'll cherish forever.
