Eli and Adam's Bespoke Wedding Stationery Journey: A Wharfedale Grange Wedding

| Becky Smithbury

The story in brief: Eli and Adam's bespoke suite for their Wharfedale Grange wedding ran from magnetic save the dates featuring a venue illustration through to a concertina-fold wedding invitation- complete with a custom illustrated timeline, a hand-drawn map, monogram wax seals and printed guest addresses. On the day, vibrant arch-shaped menus and semi-circular place cards in red, orange, pink, blue, lilac and green brought a joyful colour story to the tables, paired with illustrated table names for places that mattered to them.

A quick intro for new readers- I'm Becky, the designer behind Hawthorne and Ivory, a UK wedding stationery design studio. I create colourful, fun-loving stationery for couples from save the dates and invitations through to on the day pieces (menus, place cards, signage), guest books and thank you cards. Eli and Adam came in for the full bespoke treatment, and what follows is the suite we built together.

Creating bespoke design is always a joy, but every so often a project comes along that feels extra special... That was certainly the case when I had the pleasure of working with the wonderful Eli and Adam to design their complete wedding stationery suite for their stunning Wharfedale Grange wedding.

From the very first save the date to the final thank you cards, we wove a beautiful, cohesive stationery story that reflected their personalities, their love story, and the breathtaking venue they had chosen.

Save the Dates: A Magnetic Beginning

The couple's journey into their wedding stationery began with magnetic save the dates- practical, stylish, and a lovely keepsake for their guests. The focal point of the design was an illustration of their wedding venue, Wharfedale Grange, capturing its charm and elegance in intricate detail.

To hint at their floral theme, we mounted the magnets onto a backing card adorned with delicate watercolour wildflowers. This small but thoughtful detail offered guests an early glimpse of the romantic aesthetic that would carry through all of the wedding stationery to come.

Wedding Invitations: A Story Unfolding

For their wedding invitations, we took the storytelling a step further. Using the original venue illustration as a foundation, we added more floral elements and little touches, creating a sense of evolution and gradually revealing more of their theme.

The invitations themselves also, quite literally, unfolded the story some more! These were a stunning concertina fold design, allowing us to include plenty of personal details without feeling cluttered. This is an excellent alternative to including a suite of separate cards like details and RSVP cards.

The couple loved the idea of making their stationery truly their own, so we incorporated a fully custom illustrated timeline of their wedding day's events. From the moment their guests arrive, to the time the champagne starts flowing... each key moment was beautifully illustrated, making it easy (and exciting!) for guests to envision the flow of the day.

We also included an illustrated map! This whimsical addition featured beautiful hand-drawn details, giving guests a dreamy, artistic preview of the venue and setting the tone for the celebration ahead. It was a charming touch that really added to the overall storytelling aspect of the suite!

To make the invitation process as effortless as possible for the couple and their guests, we personalised each invitation with the guests' names, ensuring clarity on exactly who was invited. We also printed guest addresses directly onto the envelopes, taking the stress out of handwriting addresses and making posting them an absolute breeze. This small but incredibly practical touch added an extra level of refinement and ensured a seamless experience from start to finish.

All of these elements were tied together with a delicate belly band adorned with even more watercolour wildflowers and a decorative envelope liner wreathed in florals. The cherry on the cake, was a monogram wax seal to elevate the wedding invitation suite into something truly special to receive.

On the Day Stationery: A Celebration of Colour

When it came to the wedding day itself, we embraced a vibrant, joyful palette that added to the couple's unique personality. The menus and place cards were a particular highlight, with alternating shades of red, orange, pink, blue, lilac, and greens... bringing a lively and playful energy to the tables.

The menus were cut into an elegant arch shape, while the place cards were semi-circles, attached with a stylish gold split pin. This layering effect allowed for a lovely wildflower moment with more florals peeking out from behind the place cards. It was a subtle but delightful way to continue the storytelling from their invitations.

The table names were absolutely my favourite part of the on the day stationery. Instead of traditional table numbers, the couple opted for illustrated table names featuring places and experiences that meant the most to them.

This gave us the opportunity to capture so many meaningful moments fro their relationship... From their favourite local pub, a 'home away from home' in York... to the tube station they commute from every day, and even their beloved dog Billie and the park they walk her in every weekend!

We showcased their favourite date night activities, sipping on malbec and painting beautiful pottery... We even were able to reference the moment Adam proposed in Crete!

Each illustration, and each table held a little piece of their love story.

Guests adored the personal touch, and it sparked so many wonderful conversations throughout the reception and gorgeous guest reactions to the seating chart- beautifully captured by their talented photographer Hamish.

To tie everything together, we created large, impactful signage in an elegant arch shape- mirroring their menus and place cards. Their welcome sign, illustrated order of the day, and table plan all carried the same cohesive design, ensuring a polished and visually stunning aesthetic from start to finish.

Another really special touch they chose to add was a sign for their cake flavours! For this I illustrated their wedding cake to make it even more personal, and capturing all of the colour and joy in the design for their cake was so wonderful.

One of the most cherished pieces we created was their personalised wedding guestbook. This wasn't just any guestbook, and it certainly wasn't just an M&S guestbook either... it featured all of the bespoke illustrations I had created for them, scattered across the inner pages, making it a truly unique keepsake.

Guests had the opportunity to leave heartfelt messages alongside the artwork, making it a wonderful blend of treasured memories and bespoke design. A wedding guestbook like this is such a special way to gather loving messages from family and friends, providing the couple with something they can look back on for years to come, reliving the joy of their big day over and over again.

Thank You Cards: The Final Touch, with a Golden Glow

The couple's wedding stationery journey came full circle with their thank you cards. They chose a breathtaking golden-hour photo of themselves, soaking in the sunset and basking in newlywed bliss.

With the same font we used throughout their entire wedding stationery design, this was a gorgous final touch to their stationery.

On the reverse, we included one last little nod to their wedding day: the beautiful Wharfedale Grange illustration that had first appeared on their save the dates.

It was the perfect way to bring everything full circle, giving guests a final, heartfelt memento from the celebration.

A Wedding to Remember

This bespoke wedding stationery suite was an absolute joy to create! From the very first save the date design elements, right on through to their final thank you cards, every detail was infused with meaning, personality, and a true reflection of the couple's love story.

Their Wharfedale Grange wedding was not just a beautiful event but a heartfelt celebration, and I was honoured to play a small part in making it even more special.
